About Chalet Tournesol
The History Behind the Estate
Chalet Tournesol began as a private place, not a venue. The estate was shaped over time by its founder, Valerie Sobel, with a background in art, design, and philanthropy, and it reflects a peaceful way of seeing the world.
Every part of the property was developed with care and patience. Gardens were designed as places to walk and pause. Structures were built to feel grounded and human in scale. The estate grew slowly, guided by personal experience and aesthetic discipline.
A Place Shaped by Loss, Reflection, and Care
At the heart of Chalet Tournesol is the chapel, originally built by Valerie as a private place of reflection during a period of profound personal loss. It was not conceived as a ceremonial space, but as somewhere quiet to sit with grief, memory, and change.
Over time, the chapel took on a broader role. It became a place where people gathered. Standing on Cahuilla Indian land, the chapel was blessed by a local Cahuilla chief, grounding it within a longer history of the land itself. That blessing remains an integral part of the space and contributes to the feeling many people notice upon entering.
Why Choose Chalet Tournesol

An Estate Guided by Design and Intention
The estate’s layout reflects Valerie’s design sensibility. A European-inspired garden offers structure and proportion. An authentic Japanese garden, designed according to feng shui principles, introduces balance and stillness. Custom night lighting was created by a renowned lighting designer, allowing the landscape to change gently as daylight fades.

From Private Retreat to Shared Place
Chalet Tournesol eventually opened to a limited number of gatherings each year. The decision to host events came from repeated experiences of people responding deeply to the space and asking to return with others.
Today, the estate remains intentionally low-volume. Each event is given full use of the property. This approach preserves the character of the land and allows gatherings to feel personal, calm, and unhurried.

Stewardship of the Land
Chalet Tournesol is located in the mountains near Idyllwild, where seasons change, and the environment shapes daily life. The estate is maintained with respect for its surroundings and an understanding that stewardship is ongoing work. Chalet Tournesol continues to evolve quietly, guided by the same principles that shaped its beginning.
